Today was the 14th of July! Jace and I decided to ditch the city and have a picnic, and we were originally planning on going to the Bois de Vincennes, but Jace ended up buying us tickets to the Shakespeare Garden's production of Midsummer Night's Dream (la songe d'un nuit d'ete), so we ended up going to the Bois de Boulogne. It was a journey.
So, we had to go get food and print out our tickets first; we did that in the morning, but apparently we woke up in the Twilight Zone. It was nice weather in that it was cool and overcast, which is good morning weather! I got my khakis to dry, and I got to wear my denim jacket it wasn't super hot! But the ambience was weird. Like, the streets were empty. EMPTY. all the storefronts were closed. It was sort of cold? A tumbleweed passed by. Like, everything was off.
And then when we got to the Metro, and we had to walk between the Musee D'Orsay and les Invalides, and we ran right into the parade. literally. RIGHT into it. We passed all the officers eating sandwiches and smoking in uniform in front of their buses. And then when we got to the Invalides we had to wait 50 minutes for the next train to Pontoise. So we did. And we got there and took a weird way into the park and there were really no signs so we were truly wandering blind. Ee made it to Pre Catalan Park and set up our picnic, and realized our wine bottle had a cork and we forgot our corkscrew. So that was awesome. anyway, we ate all our food and lays in the cold cloudy park for 3 hours. I brought books to read, but it was actually too cold to focus and I was wearing pants and a jacket.
Anyways, eventually the sun came out and the show started! All worth it. They cut Theseus, which was super clever, and their Hippolyta was a rockstar! My literal only critique would be that the show didn't have a lot of heart. It was very funny and it was very well done, but there wasn't exactly any character that you attached yourself to. I think that company would do really well with Greek choral work, because their ensemble was very tight and very together, and arguably the best part of the show.
After the show, our spirits were lifted, and I went back to the dorm with Jace. I think we got dinner somewhere, but I can't exactly remember where. around 10:30 Jace and I split and I went to the pantheon to meet up with everyone else and watch the fireworks. it was sort of funny to see everybody chanting sit down as everyone started to stand up when the fireworks started. It was a very fitting end for the day. Even though everything went wrong initially, everything sorted itself out, and the fireworks were a nice button .
